The Halal Post: A diamond in the Rough

By Hebba Aburia
What lies behind the exterior of the downtown Plymouth post office are
a lot more than mail and stamps. As of 2012 it has become The
Northwest Islamic Community Center (NWICC). It was originally
established to provide Islamic education and services to the
increasing Muslim population in the Northwest suburb of Minneapolis.
The NWICC caters to Islamic traditions through social, cultural and
educational services. One of these services includes Jumaa prayers,
which take place in the elegantly spacious prayer room. In addition, a
sense of community can be found in the Friday family halaqas as well
as monthly community gatherings.
The family friendly environment the NWICC provides doesn’t stop
there. Educational services provided are the ECID Islamic preschool
for 2-5 year olds as well as Sunday school. Both services deliver the
building blocks of Islamic knowledge through fun filled activities and
lessons that engage the children.
Moreover, iftaar and taraweeh prayers are blessedly held during
Ramadan in addition to the joyous Eid prayers.
It is part of the NWICC’s goal to provide Islamic education and
services to their Muslim and non-Muslim communities, partaking in food
drives and senior meals are just one way they give back.
If you’re looking to get involved in a welcoming, well respected
community come on down to the NWICC located at 3300 Plymouth Blvd,
Plymouth, MN, 55447 or visit their website at http://www.nwicc-mn.org.
